PhD Studentship in the Department of Engineering at University of Leeds, UK

This project is part of a new research collaboration between Dormer Tools based in Sheffield (part of the Sandvik Group of Companies) and the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds. It is concerned with the development of accurate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of drill coolant flow and heat transfer.

The successful candidate will also be required to participate in experimental work to generate data needed to validate the CFD models and will have the opportunity to work closely with Dormer Tools Ltd and their Research and Development Facilities in Sheffield. The CFD work will develop a model of coolant flow and heat transfer and study the effect of drill and coolant hole geometry on them. The CFD modelling will be used to provide a better understanding of the flow physics and will be embedded within an efficient optimization methodology that generates optimized drill designs.

Value: Fully funded 3 year PhD (Fees £3,466 and Maintenance £13,000). The studentship is available to a UK resident or an EU student who has been resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years (due to funding restrictions).
Entry requirements: The successful candidate will have a good honours degree in Engineering, Physics or Mathematics (minimum 2:1). Prior experience of Computational Fluid Dynamics would be beneficial but is not essential.

Application deadline: 30 June 2011
Further information: To discuss this project further informally, please contact Dr Harvey Thompson or Dr Rob Hewson.

How to apply: Formal applications for research degree study should be made on-line through the University's website. Please state clearly on the funding section of the application form that you wish to be considered for this scholarship. If you have published research papers, please list these in the 'Additional Information' section.
Please upload all the documents required as soon as possible. Scanned copies are acceptable though you will need to provide originals or certified copies at registration. These will include your degree certificate(s), transcripts of marks achieved in previous degrees, plus evidence of English language qualifications if your first language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an English-speaking country. Please do not provide school certificates, or non-academic certificates.
The Faculty will contact your named academic referees directly.
If you have any questions please contact our Graduate School Office.
