Uppsala University offers PhD Position in Comparative Physiology/fish Reproductive Physiology, Sweden

at the Department of Organismal biology (Evolutionary Biology Centre). http://www.ebc.uu.se/Research/IOB_eng/comphys/
Starting date: 1 September 2011 (or as agreed).

The research group focuses on understanding the physiological mechanism involved in sexual maturation in fish, mainly salmonids. As in other vertebrates, reproduction in fish is governed by the endocrine axis - brain-pituitary-gonads (B-P-G axis).
At the onset of sexual maturation gonadotropin-releasing hormone produced by neurons in the brain stimulates the synthesis and release of pituitary gonadotropins, which promote gonad development and steroidogenesis. The B-P-G axis itself is submitted to the control of external factors (e.g. photoperiod and temperature) as well as other factors (e.g. growth and metabolic status including energy stores). The underlying controlling mechanisms of the initiation of sexual maturation (puberty) are still poorly understood. The PhD project aims to understand the endocrine and molecular signaling pathways linking metabolic status and the reproductive axis during sexual maturation.
We are looking for student with a strong interest in research. Candidates should have a master degree or equivalent in biology and a good knowledge in physiology, cell and molecular biology. Experience in cell and molecular biological techniques are an advantage. Proficiency in English is a requirement.
The application should include a CV, authorized copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records and a letter of intention (max 2 pages), where you describe yourself, your research interest and research experience. In addition the application should include relevant publications, a copy of the MSc thesis and contact information for at least two references.
The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The successful candidate will receive a postgraduate fellowship the first year and a postgraduate position year 2-4. The position can be combined with up to 20% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.
