PhD Studentship on Large Deviation Principles for Random Walks in Random Potential in UK, 2015
University of Sussex is
inviting applications for PhD studentship on large
deviation principles for random walks in random potential. The project
aims to understand the behaviour of various `rare events' associated with
aspects of three types of growth processes, namely first and last passage
percolation or random walks in random potential.
In random spatial processes such as these, we have always
two sources of randomness.
First, we have a background random environment on a
lattice that creates the `random medium' and then, under a fixed environment,
we define a measure on lattice paths.
The goal of the proposed project is to understand not
only the typical, but most importantly the atypical behaviour of these path
measures and the paths themselves, under various conditions on the random
environment.
The usual techniques necessary for such endeavours are
drawn from various areas of Analysis (Real, Complex, Convex and Functional) and
probabilistic techniques that when not completely general, are usually model
dependent.

Sussex.
Scholarship open for
EU, UK and International Applicants
Scholarship Level

Eligibility
- Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in Mathematics at first or upper second class, and/or a UK Master's degree in Mathematics, or equivalent non-UK qualifications. A high standard of written and spoken English is essential.
- The studentship is open to UK and EU resident students.
- Overseas (ex-EU) students may also apply, but applicants should note that the award waives the fees at UK/EU rates only, of £4068 per year. Due to UK government requirements, Overseas students pay higher fees of £14450 per year, so additional fees of £10382 per year will be required. We regret we are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves.
Scholarship Duration
Scholarships are offered for 3.5 years.
Coverage/Scholarship Benefits
£14057 per annum tax-free bursary and
waiver of UK/EU fees each year for 3.5 years. Full-time study.
Application Method
State in the Funding section of the
application form that you are applying for the "PhD Studentship on Large
deviation principles for Random walks in Random potential, supervised by Dr
Nicos Georgiou".
Applications should include a CV, as well as
transcripts of marks obtained on your degree(s) and the names and contact
details of two academic referees.
Overseas (ex-EU) students must state how they
will fund the additional fees required, for 3.5 years. We cannot consider
applications from Overseas students without a clear plan stating how the
additional funding will be raised.
