to Grinnell is highly selective and the competition for financial aid is more competitive as the applicant's demonstrated financial need increases. Students who demonstrate academic excellence and who maintain active co-curricular involvement are especially attractive to our admissions committee, regardless of financial need. Specific types of Financial Aid are listed below.
In order to be considered for financial aid from Grinnell, you must complete either 1) 2012-2013 International Student Application for Financial Aid and Scholarships or 2) College Board's 2012-2013 International Student Financial Aid Application. Be sure to fill in all sections completely, and if you have no funds to enter into a particular field please enter $0.00, instead of leaving the field blank. The aid application and supporting financial documentation must be completed in full and submitted along with the Common Application by the posted application deadlines.
*If you do not wish to apply for financial aid, you must still complete the shorter form: College Board's 2012-2013 International Student Certification of Finances.

Types of Financial Aid Available to International Students
Grants: Admitted international students who demonstrate financial need are eligible for grant assistance. Financial need is assessed by the Office of Student Financial Aid based on the information you and your family accurately and truthfully submit on the International Student Application for Financial Aid.
Merit Scholarships: Annually, a few admitted international applicants who demonstrate exceptional scholastic abilities and leadership skills, are awarded Merit Scholarships. An applicant does not need to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for Merit Scholarships. Scholarship amounts vary. No additional applications, forms or essays are required.
International Special Scholarships: Grinnell offers a limited number of extremely competitive comprehensive scholarships that cover a majority of the costs associated with attending the College (including tuition, room and board, fees, Health Insurance and books) that the student and their family are unable to cover. This funding is the result of gifts designated to support enrollment from specific world regions. There is no additional application form required, and a ll admitted Regular Decision students from the designated world regions are automatically considered for these awards. International Special Scholarships are designated for students from: Africa; Eastern Europe and Eurasia; Latin America; Middle East; Nepal; as well as a native speaker of Russian (regardless of citizenship). These scholarships are renewable for three additional years of study.
Campus Employment: On-campus employment is available to students, and may be awarded as part of your Financial Aid package. Many Grinnell students do work on campus. If ‘campus employment’ is part of your Financial Aid Award, the College will pre-assign a campus job (usually in Dining Services) prior to your arrival, provided you submit the employment application. A campus job can provide sufficient hours (typically 8 - 10 hours per week) to earn the amount designated in your Aid Award. The average pay rate is $8.25 per hour. You are responsible to follow through on the offer of employment, by confirming your job assignment and by maintaining your position through good performance.
*On campus employment does require employment authorization. Most international students hold F-1 status, which does allow for this opportunity. F-1 students are allowed to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, and up to 40 hours per week during break periods. Summer campus employment is not guaranteed, but F-1 students may also apply for these positions.
Loans: The College does offer some loans to international students. Unless you check the ‘loan’ box on your financial aid application, however, Grinnell does not package loan amounts in our initial aid awards. To be eligible for a loan, the College requires the student have a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident as an approved co-signer. A co-signer is someone who is willing to sign the loan agreement with you and is promising that, in the event you are unable or unwilling to pay the balance of the loan, they will be responsible for paying the loan. The maximum loan for each year is $4,000.
