Applicants must have a strong publications record and should be at the beginning of their academic career. 2. The Sylvia Naish Post-Doctoral Fellowship
With funding of up to £1,000, the Sylvia Naish Post-Doctoral Fellowship is open to post-doctoral applicants domiciled in the UK, wishing to spend up at least one month researching at the Institute. Applicants must have a strong publications record and should be at the beginning of their academic career. Those holding a lectureship or equivalent position at a university or institution of higher education will normally only be considered if they are taking unpaid leave for the duration of the fellowship. The fellowship may not be held concurrently with another fellowship or award.
3. The Sylvia Naish Scholarship
With funding of up to £1,000, the Sylvia Naish Scholarship is open to students in their second or third year of study who are registered for a higher degree at a university in the UK, and who wish to spend at least one month conducting research at the Institute. Applicants should expect to take up the award before submitting their thesis.
Tenure
The fellowships are tenable for the period stated between 1 September 2012 and 30 June 2013. It may be possible to extend the period of the fellowship, however, this does not attract any financial support beyond the amount stated above.
What We Offer
The Institute can offer shared office accommodation with wifi, internet/email, photocopying/printing facilities, and access to the Institute's Germanic Studies Library, the Senate House Library, and the libraries of the other Institutes that make up the School of Advanced Study (Advanced Legal Studies, Classical Studies, Commonwealth Studies, Historical Research, the Americas, and the Warburg Institute). Admission to the British Library can be arranged as appropriate. Fellows are offered free access to all the Institute's events, and are encouraged to participate actively.
What Visiting Fellows Do
Fellows should write a short report on the progress their research has made at the conclusion of their visit for internal reporting and possible publicity. Fellows are required to contribute to the scholarly activity of the Institute and the wider School of Advanced Study and, where their stay in London permits, are expected to contribute a presentation to one of the Institute's seminar series. Fellows are invited to place a recent, normally unpublished, piece of work in our e-repository, SAS-Space. Publications resulting from research carried out during the tenure of the fellowship must carry due acknowledgment of the Institute, and where appropriate, a copy should be presented to the Germanic Studies Library.
Financial Arrangements
The awards made are intended to subsidise the costs of accommodation during the fellow's stay in London. Payment is made direct to the award holder's bank account at the beginning of the tenure of the fellowship. Accommodation is not provided and award holders should make their own arrangements. A list of hotels and guest houses is available on our website, and we can also put award holders in touch with people offering private accommodation. The University of London Accommodation office can also assist.
Visas (New Legislation)
Regulations require non-European nationals to obtain an ID card before entering the UK. At the time of applying for an entry visa, the Visa office should provide award holders with appropriate forms enabling them to acquire an ID card, which will be valid until the visa expires.
Method of Application
Applicants should submit the application form by the closing date stated together with:
• a curriculum vitae and publications list not more than 2pp in length,
• a statement of the research project to be carried out during the period of the fellowship not exceeding 1,500 words in length, and
