The Malcolm DH Smith Memorial Scholarship at University of Melbourne, Australia 2012

Introduction
Professor Malcolm DH Smith was a leading international figure in Asian legal studies and the Founding Director of the Asian Law Centre at the University of Melbourne. In 2004,
he was appointed a full-time professor at the Chuo Law School in Tokyo, the first Australian to hold such a position. Professor Smith was a mentor, friend and inspiration for countless lawyers, scholars and students around the world, as he was for friends and family. The Malcolm DH Smith Memorial Scholarship has been established to remember Professor Smith and his exceptional contribution to Asian legal studies.

Eligibility / Criteria 
The scholarship is awarded to a first-year Melbourne JD student who has completed an undergraduate law degree or a degree majoring in Asian studies at a tertiary institution in Australia or Asia.
Applicants must:
  • Be a first-year student enrolled in, or enrolling in, the Melbourne JD degree at the University of Melbourne in 2011;
  • Be commencing at the Melbourne Law School in 2011;
  • Have completed at a tertiary institution in Australia or Asia:
    • An undergraduate law degree; OR
    • A degree majoring in Asian studies.
Successful applicants will possess:
  • Strong academic merit;
  • A commitment to understanding one or more Asian societies;
  • Capacity to speak an Asian language (desirable only).
