Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
Durham University has three Commonwealth Shared Scholarships to award to three high-calibre international students from Commonwealth developing nations who will be joining one of the following taught Masters courses in 2012/13:
The scholarships are jointly funded by the Department for International Development and Durham University. Each covers the cost of one return journey between the award-holder's home and Durham (economy class), and provides full payment of tuition fees, a stipend of £844 per month, an arrival allowance, a grant of a £200 towards the cost of study travel and a grant of £225 towards the cost of thesis binding (2010 figures).To be eligible for this scholarship candidates must meet the Association of Commonwealth Universities' eligibility criteria.

Durham Santander Scholarships
In partnership with Banco Santander, Durham University will be awarding 7 postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from Latin America.Each scholarship is worth £5000 and will be open to students applying to study a taught masters degree* in any discipline starting in October 2012.
*(Excludes MRes and Masters by Research)
Eligible countries:
- Argentina
- Bolivia
- Brazil
- Chile
- Colombia
- Mexico
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Puerto Rico
- Uruguay
- Venezuela
- Holding a conditional or unconditional offer for study on a postgraduate taught masters course from Durham University before 30th April 2012
- Intending to start your course of study in October 2012
- A national from and residing in one of the above listed countries
- Liable to pay fees at the overseas student rate
- All students who meet the above criteria will automatically be considered for the scholarship
- This is a competition and all awards will be based on academic excellence
- All successful applicants will be contacted in writing four weeks after the closing date of the 30th April 2012
Said Foundation Scholarships
Durham University is proud to be a partner of the Said Foundation in offering scholarships for students from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. The scholarships are in memory of Karim Rida Said and since their introduction in 1984 they have enabled more than 400 young people to gain a university education overseas and to contribute to the development of the Middle East region. In partnership with the Foundation, scholarships are available to study for any one year taught masters programme at Durham University. Scholarships range from partial support to full fees and a maintenance allowance. To apply for a Said Foundation Scholarship at Durham University you must:- have a good first degree
- provide evidence of your English language ability
- be Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian or Syrian and resident in the Middle East
- be able to demonstrate that you chosen Masters degree will be of use to the development of your home country or the Middle East region
- have at least two years' work experience
- hold an offer from Durham University for a taught Masters degree
- sign a binding agreement with the Said Foundation to return to your home country or another of the Foundation's target countries
The British Chevening Scholarships
Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, these prestigious awards enable overseas students to undertake postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.How to apply

What are the selection criteria for application?
Candidates for these scholarships must normally meet the following criteria:
- A graduate with proven academic skills.
- Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through *implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
- Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old.
- Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.
- Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.
- Have good English Language skills, as most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto Postgraduate courses.
What are the financial arrangements?
There are three types of scholarship:
- Type A scholarships – these cover tuition fees only.
- Type B scholarships – these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
- Type C scholarships – these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.
