History or background of award
This Scholarship was established from a fund bequeathed to the University under the Will of the late Mrs Shipherd.
Purpose of award
'For the founding and carrying on of a musical and vocal Scholarship'.
Selection criteria
The Scholarship shall be open each year to candidates whether students of The University of Auckland or not.
During the tenure of the Scholarship the Scholar shall pursue a course of study in singing for a degree or diploma at The University of Auckland, or any other University in New Zealand, or, with the approval of the Head of the School of Music, elsewhere.
Number of awards offered
One per year.
Value
$3,000 per year.
Tenure of award
Two years.

How do students apply?
Applications for the Scholarship shall be in the hands of the Administration Office, School of Music on or before 30 September of the year preceding that in which the award is sought.
Each candidate shall be examined in Singing, and the programme shall consist of a recitative and aria from opera or oratorio; a German Lied and a 20th Century English Song.
Note: Time allowed for each examination will not normally exceed twenty minutes.
(i) Examples of:
Recitative and aria from opera and oratorio
German Lied
English Song (20th century)
(ii) Sight-singing and aural test;
and of a viva-voce examination.
If in any year there is no candidate of sufficient merit, the Council shall not be bound to make an award.
If no award is made in any year, the Council on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Music may award the Scholarship to a student pursuing a course in the School of Music, or to a graduate or holder of a Diploma in Music of a New Zealand University who is continuing his or her studies at an institution outside New Zealand.
The Council may in any year (whether or not in lieu of awarding a Scholarship) make a grant of such sums as it thinks fit out of the income or accumulated income of the Scholarship Fund to a student of music wishing to proceed overseas for advanced study or training in music. Such a grant shall be made only to a student who has attained the age of twenty years, and has not attained the age of twenty-five years, and other things being equal shall be made to a holder of any Degree, with a specialization in performance, or the Diploma in Music (with or without Honours) of The University of Auckland.
Decision makers
The Scholarship shall be awarded by the Council on the result of an examination to be conducted by the Head of the School of Music or Deputy, with the assistance of another member of staff from the School of Music; and a third examiner, who will not nromally be a current member of staff in the School of Music. The assistant examiners will be appointed by Council on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Music.
How and when do students learn of the decision?
During each year of tenure the Scholarship shall be paid in two equal instalments.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
On receipt of an unfavourable report from the Head of the School of Music on the conduct or progress of a Scholar the Council may suspend or terminate the Scholarship.
The Scholarship may not be held concurrently with the Pears-Britten Scholarship in Singing but may be held with any other scholarship, bursary or award if the regulations of that scholarship, bursary or award do not preclude co-tenure.
Additional information
The Council may amend these Regulations but so that there is no departure from the main purpose of the Fund.
