Research in Business Law covers several legal areas of study. In common, they are connected to economic questions with respect to the company, industry and the society. The department's research activities centre on: contract law, corporate law, tax law, labour law, banking law, accounting and auditing law and competition law.

Within the tax law area research is carried out within the fields of international direct taxation (including European Union Law and EU taxation) and international and European indirect taxation (Value Added Tax, excises and customs). We give priority to applicants with a research plan within tax law that has an international dimension, and who have the skill to write their thesis in English.

Job assignments

Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentship may, however, work a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration.

Candidates must be prepared to perform educational and administrative tasks equal to 20 per cent of a full time post. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 section 2).

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

Those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at an advanced level may be appointed to doctoral studentships. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 section 3)

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:
1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. (Higher Education Ordinance chapter 7 section 39)

Doctoral studies in Business Law leads to either a Doctor of law degree or a Doctor of philosophy degree.

Special requirements to obtain Doctor of law degree:
The special requirements are fulfilled by those who have completed a law programme and obtained the degree Master of Laws (juris kandidatexamen/juristexamen) or equivalent. The special requirements may also be fulfilled by those who can demonstrate other educational or particular professional experience where this is judged to provide the necessary qualification for doctoral studies comparable to that provided by the degree of Master of Laws (juris kandidatexamen/juristexamen) regarding both the subject for doctoral study and general legal education of importance for that subject.

Special requirements to obtain Doctor of philosophy degree:
The special requirements are fulfilled by those who have completed the Master's programme in European and International Tax Law (MEIT) at the Department of Business law in Lund or equivalent. The special requirements may also be fulfilled by those who can demonstrate other educational or particular professional experience where this is judged to provide the necessary qualification for doctoral studies comparable to the Master's programme MEIT regarding both the subject for doctoral study and general legal education of importance for that subject.

Basis of Assessment

Admittance of a doctoral student is based on an assessment of the candidate’s ability to benefit from third-cycle studies and research will be assessed primarily with reference to the selection criteria stated in the general study plan for third-cycle studies at the department . The following selection criteria are found in the general study plan at the department without any preference:
1) The applicants general competence
2) The scientific potential of the project description
